Dozens of residents were evacuated late Thursday after a freight train derailed and a tank car carrying hydrochloric acid overturned and started leaking.

No injuries were reported from the spill or derailment in Shiawassee County. The site is in a lightly populated area about 20 miles from Flint.

Durand fire Chief Richard Rinker said about 25 to 40 people were evacuated. However, some residents chose not to leave their homes.

Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Jenkins told that 60 officials from a variety of agencies were at the scene.

"It's going to take a long, drawn-out process," Vernon Township Fire Department Assistant Chief Bill Hart added. "We're trying to take care of it so it doesn't harm anybody."

Railroad spokesman Patrick Waldron said 11 cars on the eastbound Canadian National Railway train derailed about 5:30 p.m.
