Kalahari Greentech Addresses Major Health Care Energy Use

BALTIMORE, Jan. 7, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Kalahari Greentech, Inc. (PinkSheets:KHGT) announced today that the Solar Tri-Brid System is ideal for use on buildings utilized by health care services.

The energy expenditures in health care buildings account for 113% of commercial consumption. Of all the commercial building types, health care has the fourth highest total expenditures for energy, totaling $5.3 billion per year. Health care buildings use an average of 5.3 billion Btu per building and have an energy intensity of 240.4 thousand Btu per square foot.

The average health care building is 22,200 square feet.  Inpatient health care buildings are much larger than outpatient health care buildings; an average of 74,600 for inpatient versus 8,300 for outpatient. This is the second highest intensity among all commercial building types. Inpatient health care centers use energy almost three times as intensively as outpatient health care centers. (Source:)

Ten panels of the Tri-Brid system would collect enough energy to match about one third to one half the energy requirements per floor. Depending upon the number of floors, a roof space of 2400 square feet will typically have 25% of its space used for air conditioning and ventilation units, leaving 1800 square feet to accommodate solar collectors.

A paramount advantage of the Solar Collector system is that its energy storing efficiency is at its peak mid-day, when energy demands are at their highest. This allows the solar energy to be used to decrease peak power demands, thus securing a lower energy usage charge from the utility company.
