Target Corp. plans to open 21 new stores in 13 states this year as it looks to become customers' one-stop shopping choice.

Target has expanded food offerings at its stores as part of its push to compete against rivals like Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and discounters. The company plans to remodel about 400 of its general merchandise stores across the nation in 2011.

The retailer based in Minneapolis said Tuesday that it will open six stores on March 6 in states including California, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Massachusetts.

Another nine stores will open on July 24. Those will include two stores in California, two stores in Pennsylvania and one store apiece in Hawaii, Arizona, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Massachusetts.

On Oct. 9 Target will open the remaining six stores, with two more opening in California and two stores opening in North Carolina. One store will open in Ohio and another will open in Pennsylvania on that date.

Each store is expected to have 100 to 250 employees.

Target currently has 1,752 stores in 49 states. Its stock added 4 cents to $55.26 in afternoon trading.
