New York City police say an officer taking part in a drug raid has accidentally shot and wounded a suspect's elderly father.

The shooting involved an officer whose own policeman father was killed in the line of duty nearly three decades ago.

Police say the wounded man was hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to survive. The police commissioner visited him.

A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press it appears New York Police Department Officer Andrew McCormack fired inadvertently as the raid unfolded Saturday morning in the Bronx. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation.

McCormack's dad was shot dead by a mentally disturbed man who'd barricaded himself in a Bronx home in 1983. His mother co-founded a support group for the families of slain officers.
