GAINESVILLE, Fla., Feb. 3, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Quick-Med Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:QMDT) announced today that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted registration of the Company's patent-pending Stay Fresh® Antimicrobial Technology for use in a wide range of textile applications including apparel, interior furnishings, automotive upholstery and carpeting.

Stay Fresh is a breakthrough antimicrobial technology. What makes Stay Fresh different from other antimicrobials is its chemistry and extraordinary durability. The active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide – the ingredient that provides the gentle disinfecting and bleaching action in today's generation of color-safe, alternative bleaches. This advance is made possible by Quick-Med's development of the first commercially viable technology for bonding the active ingredient onto the textile.

Stay Fresh is the only antimicrobial technology containing hydrogen peroxide approved by EPA for antimicrobial preservation of textiles.

Stay Fresh overcomes the major shortcoming of existing technologies by providing antimicrobial effectiveness after repeated laundering. "Stay Fresh textile treatment locks the power of hydrogen peroxide into fabrics," according to J. Ladd Greeno, CEO of Quick-Med. "By incorporating this potent antimicrobial into fabrics, we bring highly effective antimicrobial activity to a wide range of textile applications where the durability after repeated laundering has been an unmet challenge. Textiles stay fresher for longer because the active agent is now held in place on the fabric."

Safe and Effective

Hydrogen peroxide is nature's own antimicrobial agent, produced by human cells to fight invasive bacteria, and naturally occurring in honey as a preservative. Consumers are familiar with hydrogen peroxide as a color-safe bleaching agent and stain fighter for laundering applications.

Hydrogen peroxide is known to be a powerful antimicrobial. It is highly effective against a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, mold, mildew, fungi, algae, and viruses. Very low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide also have been shown to be effective in guarding against the growth of odors from microbial causes and in resisting deterioration or staining caused by fungi, molds and mildew.

Stay Fresh – A Powerful New Entrant to the Market

Quick-Med's Stay Fresh Technology can be used by textile manufacturers to provide a new level of antimicrobial durability for laundered textiles.  This is achieved at low cost without requiring alteration in production facilities. "Stay Fresh outperforms other technologies and can satisfy unfulfilled demand in markets where current products are simply not good enough," added Mr. Greeno.

This represents the first regulatory clearance for Stay Fresh. The Company also plans to seek approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use of Stay Fresh in select medical device applications.
