The Senate State Affairs Committee is expected to hear testimony Wednesday on a bill requiring doctors to perform sonograms before providing abortions.

The bill would also require doctors to make the results available to the patient 24 hours in advance.

Sen. Dan Patrick, a Houston Republican, said he will present a revised version of Senate Bill 16 on Wednesday. The new version would make it optional for a woman to see the sonogram and hear the fetal heartbeat. An earlier version required the doctor to display the sonogram and play the heartbeat whether the woman wanted it done or not.

Patrick says the bill is necessary to make sure women get enough information before having an abortion. Critics complain the law regulates the relationship between the doctor and patient.
