AT&T announced Wednesday a new plan that allows its mobile customers to call any mobile number in the country regardless of carrier as much as they want.

The unlimited plan — which only qualifies for AT&T numbers at the moment — will be available starting Thursday. The news may be an attempt to shift attention from another big event: Thursday also marks the first day AT&T iPhone subscribers can make a carrier switch by picking up can pick up a Verizon iPhone in stores.

To take advantage of AT&T's free unlimited calling plan, users must sign up and already be a member of its unlimited messaging program. That said, it's not entirely free. Unlimited messaging is available for $20 per month on an individual plan and $30 per month for a FamilyTalk Plan, which allows for up to five lines.

Even still, it's a nice perk for AT&T subscribers who worry about going over their monthly-minute allowance.

Sprint has offered a similar unlimited plan since 2009.
