REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 10, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Versant Corporation (Nasdaq:VSNT), an industry leader in high performance database engines, announces the formal release of db4o version 8.0. The release includes a new database synchronization module named db4o Replication System (dRS), allowing applications to seamlessly synchronize data objects between the enterprise-ready Versant Object Database server and embedded db4o databases on mobile and other network edge devices.

"Versant had two strategic objectives with the acquisition of db4o in 2008", said Dirk Bartels, VP Product Strategy at Versant. "First, we wanted to support db4o's open source developer community, which is playing an important role in the proliferation of object database technology. Secondly, we anticipated that the embedded database market for small, intelligent devices, such as smart phones and other network edge devices, would grow rapidly and our customers would require a fully integrated database solution. Now, the Versant Object Database and db4o dRS provide this functionality."

"This is an important milestone for Versant and the db4o product as a whole", said Robert Greene, V.P. Open Source Operations at Versant. "db4o dRS provides the first formal integration between the Versant Object Database and db4o's lightweight, mobile enabled database technology. With this release, Versant now has a complete solution to handle connected and disconnected mobile data from edge devices to large scale cloud computing in one seamless data management solution. Using db4o, remote applications can extract, manage and synchronize data from Versant's enterprise database servers for local access in a connected and disconnected mode of operation."

About db4o version 8.0

Besides dRS, db4o version 8.0 touts major upgrades to performance, usability and platform support. Newly published performance results from PolePosition, an open source database benchmark ( www.polepos.org ), confirm an order of magnitude performance improvement over prior releases. With new support for Android, Silverlight and Windows Phone, the db4o community has surpassed 100,000 developer community members and marks db4o as a leading embedded database engine.

"This release is a direct commitment to our growing community to produce the best embedded database technology for all Java and .NET developers", said German Viscuso, db4o's Chief Community Manager. "By listening and responding to the requirements of our Java and .Net developers and developing innovative technology for today's embedded computing applications, Versant is well positioned to continue its impressive growth of the db4o user community."

db4o has been adopted in critical applications by companies including Boeing, Indra, Sony, and State Street.
