STAMFORD, Conn., Feb. 11, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- When you talk about cooking most of us immediately think about recipes, ingredients and utensils. Energy efficiency is not typically the first thing that springs to mind. However, according to one kitchen expert, small changes in how we cook can have a big impact on how efficient we are in the kitchen.

According to Daniel Lanzilotta, owner of The Mindful Chef and an executive chef/chef educator, here are some simple tips to turn your kitchen into an energy efficient Hot Zone

1.       Avoid the Oven: Even modern ovens are highly inefficient. You should plan most of your cooking around the stove top.

2.      Properly Size Your Pot: Choose the size of your cookware based on the amount of food you are cooking. For example -  if you choose to boil a large pot of water to cook a pound of spaghetti you are not only wasting excess water but wasting the gas or electricity needed to heat it as well.

3.       Don't Over Boil: Water boils at 212 degrees. Once water begins to boil you are wasting energy if you let it continue to heat.

4.      No Preheating: When you do use your oven there is no need to preheat.  According to Lanzilotta this is simply a kitchen myth.

5.       If Remodeling Choose An Induction Cooktop: These highly efficient cooktops work on an electromagnetic field and bring food to cooking temperature much more quickly.

These tips on Kitchen Efficiency are featured on Attainable Sustainables, a program carried on MXTV, an On Demand cable channel created by MXenergy.

It is amazing to me how many different ways there are for us to improve energy efficiency in our own homes, says Marjorie Kass, MXenergy Managing Director. That is why we created MXTV and Attainable Sustainables, because there are so many simple ways that all of us can become more energy efficient if we just know what to do.

MXenergyTV, or MXTV for short, can be found on Cablevision iO Channel 654 in the Northeast United States. "Getting Into The Kitchen Zones" is just one of many programs focused on energy efficiency and "green living." The complete episode and others can be viewed at http://mxenergy.com/mxenergytv-video-archive.html.
