DULUTH, Minn., Feb. 16, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IKONICS Corporation (Nasdaq:IKNX), a Duluth based imaging technology company, today announced that Dr. Karl Shaw has joined its Digital Texturing (DTX) team as Senior Technical Consultant. Shaw is a globally recognized expert in the digital texturing and mold engraving field.

From 1997 – 2008, Shaw served as President of the Standex Engraving Group, then a $80 million enterprise with 25 manufacturing locations worldwide, engraving molds, rolls and plates using digital and analogue etching technologies.  Dr. Shaw developed many new methods and processes that were key to Standex becoming a leading mold engraving company.

Dr. Shaw has a Certificate Award from the General Management Program of the Harvard Business School and a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Bill Ulland, Ikonics CEO, said, "I am extremely pleased that Karl has joined us. His unique combination of broad industry knowledge and unparalleled technical expertise with engraving processes comes to us at a very opportune time.  After many years of research, we have made our initial equipment sale to an engraving company who is reporting both improved quality and productivity using the DTX process.  With our strategic partner, Colour Scanner Technology (CST) of Krefeld, Germany, we are increasing capacity to manufacture and distribute both CST printers and Ikonics consumables. CST already sells and services equipment worldwide, so with this partnership we will be able to support the DTX technology on a global basis. We have a number of companies very interested in adopting our technology and I believe Karl's industry credibility and technical expertise will expedite those sales."

Dr. Shaw said, "Ikonics has developed a very flexible, accurate process to transfer images. This DTX process will extend the capabilities of texturing companies while also improving their productivity and quality. DTX far surpasses traditional wax-based engraving methods.  With the CST strategic alliance, Ikonics will be able to support DTX globally.  I very much look forward to contributing to the advancement of this new engraving technology and to investigate how this superior process can be extended to other industrial markets."
