Stormy week for most of U.S.

March's stormy reputation will be on display yet again this week.

Yet another strong frontal system will sweep from west to east across the country, laying down swaths of both heavy snow and rain, as well as the threat for severe thunderstorms. Many areas poised to get either soaked or snowed over already are saturated and have rather high flood threats.

Below, we break down both the timing and specific threats as this potent storm system sweeps across the country.

Monday

• Snow moves from Great Basin and Rockies into High Plains by late in the day;
• Locations in heavy snow threat: Central Rockies ();
• Light to moderate snow spreads east into the Plains/Upper Midwest ();

• Strong winds across Desert Southwest ().

Tuesday

• Snow and gusty winds spread from the Front Range into the Cornbelt (Colo., Wyo., Neb., NW Kan., Dakotas, N. Iowa);
• Locations in potential snow threat: | | ;
• Area of rain and t-storms develops through the day, spreading and expanding east overnight from Southern Plains into the Mississippi Valley;
• Threats: Heavy rain, high winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes. Greatest severe storm and isolated tornado threat in eastern Oklahoma, western Arkansas, much of Louisiana and northeast Texas.();

Wednesday

• Wind-driven wet snow persists in the Upper Midwest. Total storm accumulations Mon-Wed of 6-12" (locally higher) from the Central Plains to the Upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes;

• Band of rain/t-storms from the Ohio Valley to the Tennessee Valley and Gulf Coast;
• Threats: More rain in saturated areas of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys could result in flooding. Severe storm and isolated tornado threat in Louisiana, Mississippi, western Tennessee, west/central Alabama, western Florida Panhandle. Storms with spotty damaging winds and possibly a tornado in southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky and middle Tennessee;

• Band of rain/t-storms sweeps into the East;
• Threats:  Flooding, particularly from New England to Pennsylvania;

• Some wet snow possible in Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. Mixture of snow, sleet, or freezing rain in northern New England.
