Authorities say a southern Louisiana man apparently drove for about six hours with his wife's body before entering a police station and saying he killed her.

Police in the Baton Rouge suburb of Zachary said Wednesday they don't know how the woman died and added the body awaits an autopsy in Terrebonne Parish, 80 miles away.

Zachary Police Capt. David McDavid declined to identify either one, saying the woman's family hasn't been notified. McDavid says the man told police his wife died between 5:30 and 6 a.m. in Houma, southern Louisiana, and he disclosed the death after midday in Zachary.

Terrebonne Parish deputies traveled to Zachary, normally a two-and-a-half-hour drive, to investigate.

Authorities say the man was being held as a fugitive.
