MELVILLE, N.Y., March 10, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. John Di Capua, Vice President of Anesthesiology Services North Shore – LIJ Health System and a Member of the Board of Directors at North American Partners in Anesthesia (NAPA), the largest anesthesia management company in the United States, spoke at the 2011 American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Conference on Practice Management in Houston on January 29.

Dr. Di Capua currently oversees anesthesia services and operations at hospitals across the North Shore – LIJ Health System. He has also served as Chairman of anesthesiology at North Shore University Hospital and LIJ Medical Center since 2006.

Dr. Di Capua debated whether a single-specialty anesthesiologist is still a viable economic model for anesthesia care alongside Dr. Robert Johnstone, Vice President for Professional Affairs at ASA, and Dr. Bradly Narr, Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Di Capua offered opinions on how the changing landscape of healthcare impacts the specialty of anesthesia and how a large, anesthesia focused organization provides better clinical and business results than either a multi-specialty or hospital integrated medical group can.

Dr. Di Capua noted during the discussion that large single specialty anesthesia organizations hold a distinct advantage over either a multi-specialty or small-scale anesthesia practice.  This advantage exists because the larger organization can retain its singular focus on anesthesia while concurrently providing the additional level of value and service that hospitals and physicians require in today's healthcare world.

By aligning with a larger anesthesia focused organization, like NAPA, independent anesthesia practices can gain access to the administrative and management infrastructure that is being required by their hospital customers while, at the same time, retaining many of their practice's local operations.  The add-on services supplied by NAPA's infrastructure allow the local practitioners to provide their hospital with clinical and administrative efficiencies while concurrently increasing revenues and driving hospital subsides lower.

"I thoroughly enjoyed providing my insight and opinions on the benefits of single-specialty anesthesia," said Dr. Di Capua. "I always appreciate the opportunity to hold candid discussions with colleagues about the future of anesthesia care.  I particularly enjoyed having the opportunity to work with Dr. Johnstone and Dr. Narr and I look forward to collaborating with them again in the future."
