PEABODY, Mass., March 18, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- BK Medical, a wholly owned subsidiary of Analogic Corporation (Nasdaq:ALOG), and Advanced Medical Diagnostics SA (AMD) announced today that they will highlight Prostate HistoScanning™ in a combined booth, #X89, at the 20th Annual European Association of Urology (EAU) Congress in Vienna, March 18-22. HistoScanning is an innovative tissue characterization application used to characterize and visualize differentiated prostate tissue based on the analysis of backscattered ultrasound. BK Medical is the sole agent for Prostate HistoScanning in much of Europe.

At the combined BK Medical and AMD booth, BK Medical, a global leader in the development of ultrasound solutions for pelvic floor and urologic disorders, will also feature two premium products: the Flex Focus™ 700 ultrasound system, a new member of the BK family of solutions for urologists worldwide; and the 8838 transducer, the world's first electronic transducer with built-in, high resolution 3D for endovaginal, endoanal, and transrectal imaging. The 8838 is the newest addition to BK Medical's comprehensive range of specialized transducers.

The Flex Focus 700 is a premium performance ultrasound system designed for urology, surgery, and pelvic floor disorders. The new ultrasound system and the company's innovative, specialized transducers are recognized as leading solutions for the clinical challenges faced by urologists worldwide. The Flex Focus 700 has been very well received since its initial introduction for surgery, where BK Medical is a global leader, and is the latest in the award-winning Flex Focus family series, which includes the Flex Focus 200, the Flex Focus 400, and the newly released Flex Focus 400 Anesthesia.

"It is critical that urologists have access to the latest technology with the most advanced imaging solutions, and ultrasound imaging provides outstanding image quality to assist their diagnoses," said Michael Brock, president of BK Medical. "The new Flex Focus 700 ultrasound system, coupled with the new 8838 3D endocavity transducer and IQPAC™ technology, enables clinicians to use premium quality imaging to diagnose their patients with confidence. The Flex Focus 700 is also extremely mobile and offers a choice of interfaces including a touch screen, touch control panel and remote control."

BK Medical's revolutionary, electronic, high resolution 3D endocavity transducer, the 8838, with both sensitive color Doppler and built-in 3D imaging for endovaginal, endoanal, and transrectal imaging, works seamlessly with selected high-performance BK Medical ultrasound systems. Its diameter is small for minimal patient discomfort, and no moving parts touch the patient.

The transducer may also be used to assess prostate geometry and size as an adjunct to Robotic Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (RARP) procedures. The resulting 3D data cube can be manipulated to assess irregularities prior to surgery for planning purposes. During surgery, the transducer can also image the prostate during the procedure and delineate the posterior border of the gland in real time during excision.

The booth will also feature a designated HistoScanning study area for clinicians to review clinical case studies and clinical trial data with AMD technical specialists. In addition, two posters have been accepted for presentation at the EAU, including an update on the multicenter Prostate HistoScanning study.

"We believe the collaboration between BK Medical and AMD has allowed HistoScanning Tissue Characterization to be a valuable tool in the clinical decision making process for prostate evaluation and follow-up," said Dror Nir, CEO of AMD. "BK Medical's ultrasound technology provides the high quality imaging raw data needed for this emerging modality to visualize tissue in the prostate. Clinicians can use these images to help make decisions based on information not currently available with conventional ultrasound technology."

AMD and BK Medical have been working closely together since the commercial launch of Prostate HistoScanning in November 2008. HistoScanning is CE marked.
