The online banking information of thousands of Bank of America customers could be in jeopardy after a Detroit-area woman discovered more than $100,000 in fraudulent charges on her account last Friday (March 25).

After Christy Clark’s debit card was denied at a Royal Oak, Mich., drugstore, she went to report the problem to her local Bank of America branch. To Clark’s surprise, the bank lobby was flooded with customers who’d all experienced the same problem, Click On Detroit reported.

As part of the bank's standard practice when it thinks a customer's account may have been compromised by a third-party, bank employees blocked the affected debit cards and issued new cards to customers whose accounts had been tampered with. The company, however, denies a hacker hit it.

“There was no security breach at Bank of America,” company spokeswoman Betty Riess told SecurityNewsDaily. Riess said a "third-party merchant" was responsible for the fraudulent charges.

Riess told SecurityNewsDaily this was an isolated incident and does not affect Bank of America customers outside the Detroit area.

If the bank was not hacked, it’s possible Ms. Clark and others were victims of ATM skimmers, devious devices planted atop or often within ATMs that steal users’ PIN codes and card information.
