IRVING, Texas, April 4, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- WebSafety, Inc. (OTCBB:WBSI), the leading provider of mobile phone software solutions that are designed to deter distracted driving, applauds the state of California for declaring April "distracted driving month." During April, the California Highway Patrol will team up with 225 local California police agencies to establish 103 California Highway Patrol Area Commands and enact a "zero-tolerance policy" to combat distracted driving through April; the country's second annual Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

"Teenagers tend to think they're invincible and can multitask while driving," said California Highway Patrol Commissioner Joe Farrow. "In reality, they're inexperienced when it comes to driving and they need to recognize the responsibility and the risks associated with the privilege."

While enforcing distracted driving laws will help to prevent teens and adults from texting while driving, WebSafety has developed a real solution. The company's CellSafety software works simply – all texting, emailing and web browsing features are disabled when a vehicle reaches 10 mph. A trusted "administrator" such as a parent, caregiver or corporate administrator can unlock the feature if the cell phone user is a passenger.

When it comes to laws against distracted driving, California is a leader, with strict laws against texting and the use of handheld cell phones while driving. About 20 states, however, have not enacted any sort of law against texting, despite the nearly unanimous agreement among scientists that the practice is dangerous and deadly.

According to several studies, texting while driving can be 2-4 times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. In fact, twice as many teens are injured while texting and driving than while drinking and driving. Seventy three percent of driving aged teenagers admit to having texted while behind the wheel. The National Safety Council estimates that 200,000 crashes are caused by texting drivers each year.
