STAMFORD, Conn., April 5, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- More than 1 million Pennsylvanian home and business owners have made the switch from traditional utility service to independent, competitive electricity providers as of March 30, 2011, according to the Retail Energy Supply Association (RESA.)  RESA also notes the trend does not just hold true in Pennsylvania but across the nation, with millions more switching nationwide in competitive deregulated markets.

The public embrace of independent electricity comes as no surprise to MXenergy President and CEO Jeffrey Mayer.

"A competitive marketplace is at the very foundation of this nation's economy," says Mayer. "When there is competition, the consumer benefits. It is for that very reason I founded this company 12 years ago, to provide low-cost, competitive rates to regular homeowners. As the recent data from RESA demonstrates, people are increasingly realizing how much they can benefit from shopping around."

According to the RESA release, since 2008 homebuyers have been able to save between 5-25% on their retail electricity bills. Many independent providers offer special promotions, variable rate plans and renewable energy options.

Mayer also notes however that competition does not come without risk.

"As with any buying decision, it is critical for consumers to choose their provider carefully. Look for a company with a stable, long-term history and knowledge of the industry," says Mayer. "Read the fine-print carefully, and make sure you understand and are choosing the provider and rate plan that is best for you."

With a volatile energy market, competition can offer protection as well.

"As we have all observed, the energy market has experienced wild swings over the past year," says Marjorie Kass, MXenergy Managing Director. "We offer people the opportunity to protect themselves from dramatically fluctuating prices by locking in a low fixed rate. In addition, many providers, MXenergy included, offer additional savings to homeowners in the form of savers guide coupons and refer-a-friend bonus money."

MXenergy is not only one of the nation's fastest growing energy providers but also one of the longest running. Celebrating its 12th anniversary in 2011, the independent energy provider entered the market in 1999 offering natural gas and electricity for fixed low rates to homeowners and businesses. Founded on the principles of service and sustainability, MXenergy has consistently maintained its environmental commitment, offering renewable energy, carbon offsets, and environmental educational programming.

MXenergy is a proud member of RESA.
