Microsoft is rolling out its monthly security patch tomorrow (April 12), a crop of software updates that will fix 64 vulnerabilities.

The security updates cover a wide range of Microsoft software, including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Internet Explorer, Office and Visual Studio. Of the 17 bulletins, nine are considered critical on Microsoft’s TechNet blog.

The monthly security fix will also address a serious security bug in Microsoft Internet Explorer that for months has enabled attackers to exploit the Web browser’s MHTML processing — a file format made up of HTML code and external audio or image links — to execute malicious scripts on a user’s system.

By tackling 64 separate flaws, this is Microsoft’s largest number of fixes issued in a single month.
