HERNDON, Va., April 12, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) is partnering with the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) on a nationally recognized science, technology, education and mathematics (STEM) education program supporting military families.

The NMSI's Initiative for Military Families (IMF) program provides funding and support for advance placement math and science courses to schools serving military installations.

"It's encouraging to see such emphasis placed on STEM initiatives nationwide, from the President to our nation's principals," said Sandra Evers-Manly, vice president of corporate responsibility for Northrop Grumman. "The corporation's partnering with NMSI is reflective of our dedication to STEM as the catalyst to challenge, enlighten and grow our next generations' scientists and engineers. Through this program, we're able to partner directly with schools near Northrop Grumman facilities who serve our nation's military families."

Northrop Grumman is providing funding for the IMF program for two schools in Oklahoma, Carl Albert High School in Midwest City and Eisenhower High School in Lawton; and one in Georgia, Howard High School in Macon.

The IMF's mission is to provide consistent, high-level math and science education in high schools serving military bases in the United States. The initiative brings college-level math and science courses to students through the Advanced Placement curriculum and provides continuity for students in that coursework when their families are transferred. The program was launched in the 2010-2011 school year in four public high schools.

Northrop Grumman Corporation is a leading global security company whose 75,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in aerospace, electronics, information systems, and technical services to government and commercial customers worldwide.
