MELVILLE, N.Y., April 19, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq:CMTL) announced today that its Tempe, Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp., received $1.0 million in orders from a mobile operator to support the expansion of a satellite-based telecommunications network in Latin America. An assortment of ground station equipment was ordered, including modems, block up converters and frequency converters.

Several models of Comtech EF Data's bandwidth-efficient modems were selected, including the CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem, the CDM-700 High-Speed Satellite Modem and the CDM-570 Satellite Modem. The modems use technologically advanced components, innovative designs and application software for superior performance and features. The functionality provided by the modems enables users to maximize satellite resources, increase link throughput and service quality, and reduce both the OPEX and the CAPEX associated with satellite networks – all particularly beneficial in bandwidth-challenged regions.

Also specified in the order were the LPOD Block Up Converter, the DT-4503 Down Converter and the UT-4505 Up Converter. The LPOD is an outdoor unit that eliminates the requirement for a modem to supply a DC power source and a 10 MHz reference to the BUCs and LNBs. It offers valuable features not found in other L-Band block up converter products. The DT-4503 and UT-4505 are indoor, rack-mountable units that support the patented daisy chain switching, and provide high performance, cost-effective frequency conversion.

"Comtech was selected to power the expansion of this mobile operator's state-of-the-art network based on the link optimization and operational benefits our equipment can deliver," commented Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp.
