The Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation, a regional competition among Southern California mayors to see whose city can be the most water wise for Earth Month, will conclude on Saturday, April 30. As part of the competition, residents throughout southern California make series of online commitments on behalf of their city to save water, energy, and reduce pollution over a one-year period. The city with the highest percentage of residents to make pledges at the end of the 30-day competition will receive prizes for all participants including 500 tickets to an Angels Game, Park Hopper Passes to Disneyland, and reduced admission to the Aquarium of the Pacific. 
   
WHERE: Residents can take the challenge online through midnight, Saturday, April 30, at www.mywaterpledge.com.

Mayors from more than 20 cities, representing over 1.5 million people, are actively participating in the challenge, which was developed by famed artist and conservationist Wyland and introduces simple changes that residents can make to use water more efficiently. Participating Mayors such as Joe Carchio of Huntington Beach, Frank Scotto of Torrance, Bob Foster of Long Beach, Frank Tanaka of Gardena, Dave Leckness of Mission Viejo, and Ara Najarian of Glendale, have launched inter-city public awareness campaigns to promote local interest and participation in the challenge.

Current standings and results may be viewed at www.mywaterpledge.com/socal/stats. Current leading city is Hermosa Beach. Total positive impacts (if residents adhere to pledges) over the next year, include: 833 million gallons of water saved, 3 million pounds of waste eliminated from landfills, 194,000 water bottles not used, $2 million in cost savings to residents, and a reduction of 26 million lbs of CO2. The challenge is a non-profit community service project presented by the Wyland Foundation, a 501 c3 non-profit organization. Other sponsors include Toyota, AES Corporation, and KCAL / KCBS, and West Basin Municipal Water District.
