NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J., April 29, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Chemetall Mexicana is the recipient of Mexico's Industria Limpia or Clean Industry certificate. This voluntary environmental audit program, known as the National Program of Environmental Audit, was developed by the Environmental Protection Federal Procuraduria (PROFEPA), the federal agency responsible for enforcement of environmental regulations. PROFEPA is the Mexican equivalent of the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States or the Canadian Ministry of the Environment.
The path to certification began more than three years ago for Chemetall Mexicana when the site was audited. The facility was audited for regulatory compliance, environmental risks (such as possible site contamination), and good engineering and operational practices by external auditors. Areas reviewed during the audit included:
- Water use and management
- Surface and underground contamination
- Air pollution
- Noise generation
- Hazardous waste generation and management
- Non-hazardous waste generation and management
- Handling of special wastes
- Environmental risk
- Emergency response
