  Powerful storms target mid-Atlantic

Dark clouds and heavy rain rolled into Washington, D.C., on Thursday bringing tornado warnings, while in Maryland storms pulled down tress. Elsewhere, hail battered Ohio and heavy rain delayed the U.S. Open in Pennsylvania. NBC’s Tom Costello reports.

  Bracing for more rain, wind

Severe thunderstorms are in the forecast through Thursday evening from the southern Mid-Atlantic to the Carolinas and Mississippi. Rain will also hit the northern High Plains where there’s a chance of damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes. The Weather Channel’s Chris Warren reports.

There are 75 million Americans in the path of a severe storm system that could bring a derecho, which is a group of thunderstorms accompanied by high winds. The storms may stretch 240 miles as they head east, blowing down trees and power lines and prompting flood watches. NBC’s Mike Seidel reports.
