MYRTLE BEACH, S.C, May 5, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Donna Eddington has been named as the new general manager of The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, announced today by the club's board of directors. Eddington had been serving as clubhouse manager since 1999. Her new duties take effect on May 1. She is the first female general manager in the history of the club and one of only four in this position among the Top 50 clubs currently listed on Golf Digest's "Top 100 Greatest Public Courses" list.

"Donna (Eddington) is by far the most thought of person at this club," said David Shepler, the departing general manager. "The board of directors made a wise decision. She has the people skills, the business knowledge and the support of the membership and the employees. She is the right person for this job."

Shepler, who served as general manager of The Dunes Golf & Beach Club since 1999, has accepted the position of general manager and chief operating officer at Thunderbird Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Eddington arrived in Myrtle Beach in 1999 after serving as clubhouse manager at San Antonio Country Club in Texas. Shepler was the general manager at that club and later hired Eddington a few months after accepting the same position at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club. This is Eddington's first position as general manager in her career.

"I have had a great mentor in David (Shepler), so I feel very prepared for accepting this role," said Eddington. "The Dunes Club is a very special place with amazing members and a very dedicated staff. I'm proud to have been offered this great opportunity, but overall it takes a team and we have a great collection of quality men and women here at this club. I don't see myself as the first woman to serve as general manager here, but I understand some people may point that out. I just want to do the best job I can and maintain the excellence The Dunes Club has achieved over the years."

The Dunes Golf & Beach Club is recognized as one of the most prestigious clubs in the United States. The club was formed in 1947 by a collection of influential local businessmen whose goal was to create a corporation and build a golf course. The legendary Robert Trent Jones designed the highly regarded golf course that populates virtually every Top 100 list for best layouts in the country.

Presently, The Dunes Golf & Beach Club is ranked among "America's Top 100 Golf Courses" by Golf Digest (No. 46), and is listed on the "Best Resort Courses" in the United States by Golfweek (No. 30).

The signature hole at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club is the par 5 13th hole nicknamed "Waterloo." In the past, GOLF Magazine has recognized this hole as one of "America's Best 100 Holes."

This summer, The Dunes Golf & Beach Club will host the 97th Carolinas Amateur and qualifying for the Southern Amateur. The club has also been home to the Senior Tour Championship, USGA Women's Open Championship, PGA TOUR Qualifying School, and the Golf Writer's Association of America (GWAA) Tournaments, among many other high-profile golf events.

Eddington resides in Myrtle Beach with her husband, Jeff. She has three children and two grandchildren.
