IRVINE, Calif., May 9, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor technology aimed at powering a smart, secure, connected world, today announced it has shipped more than 100 million Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) ports worldwide. The company's broad PoE product offering includes single- and multi-port PowerDsine™ midspan systems, a PowerDsine PoE extender, and a variety of advanced PoE controller ICs.

Microsemi's PowerDsine PoE midspans safely deliver up to 72 watts (W) of power over the same standard Cat5 or better cabling as network data. The PowerDsine midspans allow organizations to upgrade their networks to PoE capability while cutting energy costs and simplifying maintenance through improved per-port and system-wide power management. The company's PoE extender allows deployment of PoE-powered products at ranges of more than 400 meters, and its PoE ICs provide the core technology for building Ethernet switches and midspan equipment.

"Microsemi has played an integral role in simplifying network deployment and maintenance while improving energy efficiency for more than a decade," said Paul Pickle, Senior Vice President of Microsemi's Integrated Circuit Group. "We continue to forge new territory with PoE advances that improve power distribution, backup, efficiency and management in a wide variety of network deployment applications."

Microsemi is a pioneer and de facto leader in PoE technology, and offers a comprehensive product family that supports a wide range of devices from WLAN access points and IP phones to security cameras and thin-client computers. The company also has helped to enable a variety of PoE industry advances and, in 2010, was named to head a sub-committee within the HDBaseT™ Alliance for Home Entertainment Connectivity, a cross-industry alliance whose goal is to promote and provide key standards for improving digital home entertainment energy efficiency. The company's recently announced PD69108 8-port Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) PoE manager IC is the first of its kind to support the higher currents required by both high-power IEEE 802.3at PoE Plus and emerging HDBaseT specifications.

"Microsemi has been actively involved in the development, testing and deployment of the high-power IEEE 802.3at PoE Plus standard and four-pair powering technology, enabling PoE to support a broader range of powered devices including notebook computers and access control systems," said Sani Ronen, Senior Product Line Manager for Microsemi's PowerDsine Midspans. "Most recently, we are leading the development of HDBaseT technical standards for whole-home distribution of uncompressed HD multimedia content using energy-efficient Power-over-HDBaseT -- or PoH -- technology. This will enable even more exciting applications for core PoE technology."
