DETROIT, May 12, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Covisint, a Compuware (Nasdaq:CPWR) company and JVHL, a network consortium of 129 hospital laboratories located throughout Michigan, today announced that they are delivering a statewide solution to automatically standardize laboratory orders and results, while still allowing physicians to use their preferred terminology and pick lists.

The new tool will be made available in the coming months to Michigan's 22,000 patient care physicians through Amagine, Inc., a subsidiary of the American Medical Association (AMA), in collaboration with the Michigan State Medical Society. The AMA selected Covisint in April of 2009 for the AMAGINE™ platform to provide physicians with innovative health information technology solutions and to support meaningful use initiatives.

Covisint's solution will provide the technology platform to seamlessly convert all local lab terminology into LOINC (Logical Observation Identifier Names and Codes) that identify laboratory tests and clinical observations.

"Supporting data integration between physicians and labs they use has been a hurdle for hospitals to achieve meaningful use," said Robert Musacchio, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Business Product Solution of Amagine, Inc. "With Covisint and JVHL, we are pleased to offer Michigan labs a seamless avenue for exchanging data with physicians by overcoming interoperability problems between different sets of technology."

Because the conversion of local lab terminology is done behind the scenes, participating physicians can remain in their comfort zone without any workflow changes or productivity declines – a huge plus for garnering physician support. Payers will have access to previously unavailable details about the reason a test was ordered and the context for the result.

This greater specificity and accuracy of data will lead to enhanced patient care and can provide hospitals and physicians with greater efficiencies and accessibility in the rapidly changing healthcare environment. Participating hospitals and physicians will have a treasure trove of data that they can use to demonstrate meaningful use, easily satisfy burgeoning quality reporting mandates, qualify for performance incentives and accommodate the shift to accountable care organizations (ACOs) and other collaborative care approaches.

According to Jack Shaw, executive director of JVHL, "Historically, hospital labs have developed their own unique in-house codes, which limited the utility of laboratory data outside each individual hospital's environment. We are excited that we have been able to work with Covisint to create an affordable and workable model that will have a direct impact on improving patient care for Michigan residents."

"The messaging of clinical information to the point of care is certainly essential, but no longer enough," asserts Brett Furst, Vice President of Covisint Healthcare. "Providing rationalized data to hospitals, plans and physicians is key to supporting the movement to improve care coordination and quality outcomes."
