Online scammers are capitalizing on the high-profile scandal surrounding shamed former IMF boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn to spread a dangerous piece of Mac-specific malware.

A video is currently working its way around Facebook claiming to have "really freaky" footage of Strauss-Kahn sexually assaulting a hotel maid, Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at the security firm Sophos reported.

The phony video, appearing on Facebook walls, is titled "IMF boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn Exclusive Rape Video — Black lady under attack!"

(Strauss-Kahn, the IMF managing director from 2007 to 2011, was arrested on May 14 for allegedly sexually assaulting a chambermaid at the Sofitel hotel in New York.)

While the Facebook message is offensive in its own right, its truly devious nature comes to light after you click on the link to attempt to watch the video.

Cluley reports that the link first takes users to a still from a pornographic movie, and then to a fake antivirus page that attempts to install the dangerous MacDefender Trojan on users' computers.

A security problem that's plagued Apple for the past month, MacDefender — and its aliases, including MacProtector and MacSecurity — worms its way onto Mac computers and tries to get users to purchase fake antivirus software. The Trojan, in some cases, hijacks users' Web sessions and redirects them to pornographic sites until they comply.

"In many ways this is a genius piece of social engineering to frighten unsuspecting Mac users into installing the software and handing over their credit card details," Cluley wrote.

It's crucial that Facebook users never open unsolicited links or videos, and they should always be extra cautious when researching popular news items, as search results are often manipulated by scammers with devious intentions.
