Twitter usage among young adults has doubled in the past six months and is also rising in popularity with minorities, according to a new report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.

The study found that Twitter use by those ages 25 to 34 has doubled since late 2010 from 9 percent to 19 percent.

Meanwhile, about 13 percent of online adults use Twitter as of May 2011, up from eight percent of online adults in November 2010. In addition, more than half (54 percent) of Twitter users access the service on their phones.

Non-white Internet users continue to have higher rates of Twitter use than their white counterparts. In fact, the Twitter adoption gap between African-Americans and whites has increased over the past six months.

By May 2011, that gap was 16 percentage points — 25 percent of online African Americans now use Twitter, compared with 9 percent of whites. African-American and Latino Internet users are each significantly more likely than whites to be Twitter adopters.

In addition, one in ten African-American Internet users now visit Twitter on a typical day — which is double the rate for Latinos and nearly four times the rate for whites.
