SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — A Virginia man found dead in his home was killed by his pit bull, police say.
The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Department said in a news release that an autopsy found indications of paw marks on the victim's body and defensive wounds on the fingers and hands.
Police said the body of 38-year-old David Quyon Haigler was found Saturday in his home by his 18-year-old son.
According to the Free Lance-Star, the room in which Haigler was found was in disarray and a wooden baseball bat was located near the body. Blood was reportedly on the floor as well as on furniture and the walls.
Sheriff's Lt. Col. Michael Timm told the Free-Lance Star that the 6-year-old pit bull was roaming free in the house. Another 6-year-old pit bull was chained in a different area of the residence.
Timm said both dogs are being held at the county animal shelter, and according to a report, their fates have yet to be determined.
The fatal dog attack is the area's first in years. Eighty-two-year-old Dorothy Sullivan died in 2005 after being attacked by three roaming pit bulls. According to the Free-Lance Star, a 4-year-old boy was killed that same year by his family's Rottweiler.
