Move over, Britney and Bieber. There's a new breed of celeb dominating the social media world: Fido.

According to a new study from pet insurance company PetPlan, one in ten pets in the United Kingdom have a Facebook, Twitter or YouTube presence, and more than half of pet owners upload and share pictures of their pets online.

"Animals are more popular than celebrities on Facebook and other social networking sites," said Neil Brettell, director of insurer PetPlan, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Some have credited a portion of social media's overall success to the massive viral appeal of pet videos posted to sites such as YouTube and Facebook.

Owners have also generated a huge following for their pets by creating platforms for them. For example, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has a dedicated Facebook page for his dog Beast, which has over 145,000 likes on the site.
