Chart: Who holds the most U.S. debt?

While China is the largest single foreign government holder, its total stake amounts to only about 8 percent of all U.S. debt. Other foreign governments together hold about 25 percent of the total. Private investors – from insurance companies to mutual funds – hold another 28 percent. The rest is held by the Federal Reserve. Click on the navigation at lower right for more.
