Police say a 17-year-old girl who lost both legs while trying to hop a freight train was trying to get to Fort Collins, Colo., where she attends Colorado State University, after a trip to Denver.

Authorities say the teen's legs were severed at the knee when she fell under the train on Monday in Longmont, about 30 miles north of Denver and 30 miles south of Fort Collins.

Her name hasn't been released. Police say her parents live in Sandy, Utah.

Police say four males were with her and one suffered minor injuries. The others weren't hurt.

Authorities say the four got a ride in a car from Denver to Longmont and planned to ride the train to Fort Collins. It wasn't immediately clear how they got to Denver.
