Tropical Storm Maria became the third Atlantic hurricane of the 2011 season as it moved towards Canada's Newfoundland, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Thursday.

Winds were clocked at 75 mph, just enough for Category 1 hurricane status.

Canada issued a hurricane watch for parts of Newfoundland and Maria was expected to make landfall on or near Avalon Peninsula on Friday.

Some overnight strengthening was possible, but then Maria was expected to weaken on Friday.

Bermuda earlier discontinued a tropical storm watch as Maria passed nearby.
