A Japanese tourist fell off a tour trolley near a Honolulu shopping center and later died, police said Tuesday.
The man, 71, was taken to a hospital in critical condition after falling out as the trolley was leaving Ala Moana Center at about 3:15 p.m. Monday, said Honolulu police spokeswoman Caroline Sluyter.
He was "standing next to the right side, center exit," she said. "As it made a left turn, he fell off the trolley on to the road."
He died from injuries sustained from falling but was not hit by a car, Sluyter said.
The medical examiner's office did not release his name, pending notification of family members. He was pronounced dead late Monday evening.
The trolleys are a popular sightseeing vehicle used among tourists in Waikiki. Unlike iconic San Francisco trolleys, the gasoline-powered vehicles travel on wheels and not on a track. The trolley in Monday's accident is operated by E Noa Tours, which has about 60 trolleys. It's one of three companies that offer trolley rides for Waikiki tourists, said E Noa General Manager Ron Darmawan.
E Noa offers shopping excursions on the trolleys, along with stops at various Waikiki and Honolulu locations.
Darmawan would not comment on the accident, citing the ongoing police investigation.
Police don't suspect any criminality. Speed, alcohol and drugs are not considered factors, Sluyter said, adding that traffic was moderate at the time.
She said Honolulu police don't know of a previous trolley death in recent history.
