Police in Bermuda say a U.S. woman was removed from a JetBlue flight to New York and is being held for a mental health evaluation.

A Bermuda Police Services statement says she is being assessed under the British territory's Mental Health Act. Her name was not released, and the statement did not say if she had been charged with anything. Police would not comment beyond the statement, which was released Wednesday.

The airline said earlier that Sunday's flight was en route to New York when the pilots returned to Bermuda and authorities took the woman into custody. The Royal Gazette newspaper reported that passengers said the woman banged on a bathroom door and tampered with the beverage trolley during the flight.
