Rescuers on Friday recovered the bodies of two workers killed after a highwall collapsed at a western Kentucky coal mine, according to local media reports.

Crews found the bodies of 47-year-old Darrel Winstead of Madisonville and 33-year-old Samuel Lindsey of Mortons Gap on Friday afternoon, WFPL reported.

The two workers, employed by a blasting crew, were driving a truck near a highwall at Armstrong Coal's Big Run Mine near Centertown when it collapsed around 6:30 a.m., according to Charles Shields, director of the Ohio County Emergency Management Agency.

The men were trapped in or near the truck by falling rock and earth, Shields said.

Several other miners at the site were injured by falling rock, WFIE reported.

The mine, which opened just over a year ago, will be closed pending a state investigation, WFPL reported.
