Google is rumored to be working on a native Gmail app for the Apple iPhone.

According to a report by MG Siegler , sources said it's likely Google has already finished the app and submitted it to Apple for review.

Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, an app for Gmail has been in demand among the device's users. Gmail is indeed optimized for the iPhone and can be accessed via a mobile website, but a native app would be faster and could include an array of new features, including push notifications, advanced search and the ability to star certain messages. There's also been speculation that there could be Google+ integration.

Siegler's cited sources who have seen the app and called its performance "pretty fantastic."

However, it’s still uncertain whether Apple will approve the Gmail app since it has rejected competing email apps in the past.
