Software giant Adobe issued a critical update for its Adobe Shockwave Player to tackle security vulnerabilities that leave older versions of programs open to attack.

The update, released yesterday (Nov. 8), addresses four memory corruption vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to execute malicious code on a user's computer. It affects version 11.6.1.629 and earlier versions of Shockwave for both Windows and Mac systems.

Adobe recommends that Shockwave users upgrade to version 11.6.1.633 by visiting Adobe's website. Users also can visit this page on Adobe's site to see whether they have Shockwave installed and have to update their version.

Also updating its software yesterday was Firefox maker Mozilla, which released Firefox 8 and fixed eight vulnerabilities, five of them critical, in the popular Web browser.
