Landmarks Survey Methodology

An online survey, developed by the editors of Travel + Leisure, appeared on travelandleisure.com from September 15, 2011, to October 31, 2011. Respondents were asked to rate their favorite 60 landmarks in a selection of categories (skyscrapers; parks and public spaces; museums; bridges; sports and performance venues; classic landmarks); each landmark was pictured and described. Classic landmarks opened in 1996 and earlier; new landmarks opened within the last 15 years (after 1996). All subject categories were available for rating at all times. Respondents were asked to identify whether they had seen the landmark; landmarks that are the most visited had the highest number of respondents who claimed to have “seen it.” Responses were collected and tabulated by travelandleisure.com. The survey results appeared in the January 2012 issue of Travel + Leisure and online at travelandleisure.com/landmarks.
