Last month, when Apple debuted its new high-definition iPad model, it brought two games with it to really show off the capabilities. One of them was Namco Bandai’s "Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy," a high-octane flight action game where players shoot targets out of the sky and on the ground using a series of highly efficient fighter jets.
Now available in the App Store for $5, it's well worth a try, even if you haven’t upgraded from the iPad 2.
In the game, you’re a cocky pilot whose army has been wiped out by a ruthless enemy force. However, with the help of a group of mercenaries, you’re given the opportunity to fight back, taking on their forces in hard-hitting combat scenarios.
On the new iPad device, "Sky Gamblers" looks wondrous, with its gorgeous 3D city modeling and explosive effects, as well as the cool smoke trails that come from your fired missiles. However, we’re happy to report that the game looks almost as good using the iPad 2, with barely any skimps in performance. Some of the building models look a little muddy up close, but that’s really about it.
Furthermore, "Sky Gamblers" also provides excellent control options. Casual players can use the on-screen D-pad for movement, along with accessible targeting controls to blast enemies with ease. Veteran players can also make adjustments to pitch and accelerometer. Though, using these features, we found they just get in the way of the regular controls.
Along with the single-player campaign (which will take a couple of hours to get through, bonus missions and all), "Sky Gamblers" also offers online play with others across a number of modes, including traditional Team Deathmatch and a variety of survival modes. The multiplayer action ran very smoothly in the sessions we tried out, and it doesn’t matter whether you connect with the iPad 2 or newer model. (However, the original iPad, sadly, isn’t fully compatible.)
If you’re looking for a solid aviation action game, or you just want a game that really brings the most out of your new device, "Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy" is clearly a good bet.
