Vinyl records have made a comeback, in large part because of hipsters who have made them cool again.   Sales of vinyl albums in 2011 increased 40 percent from the previous year, reaching 3.9 million, according to a Nielsen study released yesterday (April 18). The top-selling vinyl album in 2011 was "Abbey Road," recorded by  the Beatles  in 1969, but the rest of the top 10 were released by contemporary artists like Mumford and Sons.   And sales are expected to continue their meteoric rise. It's not just about nostalgia, but also quality.   "Whether it’s a CD or a download, there’s a certain jaggedness to it," Chuck Leavell, keyboardist for the Rolling Stones, said in an interview with Forbes. " Vinyl  wins every time. It’s warmer, more soothing, easier on the ears."   The Nielsen figures came out ahead of National Record Store Day, which is this Saturday (April 21). The event launched four years ago in San Francisco in support of independent record stores (where nearly 70 percent of vinyl was purchased last year.)   So what albums are hot this Record Store Day? "Port of Morrow" by the Shins tops the list, followed by "El Camino" from the Black Keys, and the eponymous "Bon Iver" is No. 3.   You also can find vinyl online at Amazon, Insound, Aural Exploits and Discogs. The latter also hosts a social network for vinyl enthusiasts.
