Facebook Use Slips a Bit in May

Online Americans spend about seven hours a month on Facebook. For the first time this year, that figure dropped a bit. People spent 11 minutes less on Facebook in May than they did in April, according to Nielsen's monthly Internet usage report released today (June 22).   That doesn't sound like much until you consider that spring semester ended for most students during the first week of May.    But don't assume that Facebook is losing its hold on college students, Jessica Forsdick, a sophomore at the University of Utah, said. She wasn't surprised by the dip in Facebook time.   "If you looked in the library, almost all the kids were on Facebook. In class it was the same thing. Everyone had their iPads and laptops open to Facebook," she said. "Now that school's out, people are actually going out and doing things."

"Now that school's out, people are actually going out and doing things."   Facebook is still the place  where people spend the most time, Nielsen reported. No other site comes close. The next two sites that occupied the most amount of online time were Yahoo and AOL, but neither consumed more than an hour and a half.   Americans spend about 30 hours online each month, up slightly from April to May. Nearly 212 million people were active online last month and most of them (72 percent) visited Facebook. Only Google had more visitors than Facebook, by about 20 million, but people spent less than two hours on Google sites such as Search and  Gmail.  (Google's YouTube was measured separately and accounted for one hour and 51 minutes of online time in May.) Facebook consumed about 22 percent of online time.   Time will tell whether Facebook is losing its  hold on kids  or if everything returns to normal in the fall when school starts up again.
