Facebook Moves Toward Universal Email

Facebook seems to be in the midst of a game of musical chairs as it tries to revamp its user email policy. Yesterday, your personal email address lost its place on your Timeline, and was replaced with a new @Facebook.com address.   The change sparked outrage across the Internet, but a Facebook spokesperson said that this shouldn't come as a surprise. "The company announced the coming change in April. We’ve been updating addresses on Facebook to make them consistent across our site," she said.   Take a look: Go to your Timeline page and click on "About" under your profile picture to reveal your contact information. Facebook has added your Facebook email and made it visible by default to your friends. At the same time, your "outside" email address (if you had one) has been hidden.   You can change the visibility settings as well as the contact emails you'd like shown on your profile. Click "edit" and select who can see each email address and whether to show or hide each one in  your Timeline  "About" section. You can hide your new Facebook email address on your profile, but you can't remove it from your account, like you can with "outside" email addresses. In your account settings, you'll see the email addresses you've listed, along with options to select a primary email and remove email addresses. However, the new Facebook address gets a section of its own and there are no options to make changes, which means anyone could send you a message simply by adding @Facebook.com to your name.   Any email sent using the new Facebook address will appear in your Facebook "messages."   Critics have lambasted Facebook for making the change without notifying users. And yes, it would have been nice if Facebook had  posted an alert  at the top of your page like they've done with other information they wanted to communicate with members. However, after everyone takes a seat with their new Facebook address, won't it be easier to remember — or guess — anyone's email address?  Gmail , Hotmail, Yahoo Mail may someday find themselves without a chair at this party.
