'Transformers: Fall of Cybertron' Is a Must for Fans

Two years ago, High Moon Studios did an amazing job with its first game based on Hasbro's popular "Transformers" license, "War For Cybertron," with an original storyline and plenty of multiplayer options, both competitive and cooperative. Fast-forward two years, and the world of the Autobots and Decepticons returns for the follow-up, "Fall of Cybertron" (for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC). It doesn't disappoint.

Part two follows where the first left off. The home world of the Transformers is in its final days. The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, just want to leave peacefully, seeking refuge on a new planet. The Decepticons, however, have other plans, and want to steal as much Energon energy-storage devices they can muster for themselves.

"Fall of Cybertron's" single-player campaign lets you play as characters from both sides, including more notable characters like Optimus and Decepticons leader Megatron, as well as new additions, including the enormous Bruticus (formed by five Combaticon robots) and the Dinobot Grimlock — a fan favorite. Each stage provides a heaping dose of action, letting you destroy enemies either in vehicle form or as a robot. Stations scattered throughout let you change your weapons as well, with choices ranging from a close-range scatter blaster to a powerful pulse rifle

The gameplay is mostly satisfying, though there are times when the steering controls on smaller cars are a bit slippery, sometimes even leading to a crashing halt or a collapse off the road. But the glitches are mediated by Grimlock, who's an utter blast to play in Dino mode, using flame breath and monstrous chomps to destroy foolish Decepticons in his way.

Along with single player, " Fall of Cybertron " also has a great co-op-supported Escalation mode, where you battle waves of enemies. A competitive multiplayer mode is here too, with a huge amount of customization options and skills to level up.

Visually, "Fall of Cybertron" is miles ahead of the original, with bigger levels, stunning animations and thrilling war effects. Things do go too far at times when the frame rate really slows down, but it's a temporary issue.

Likewise, the audio really excels, between the orchestrated musical score and the voice acting, including classic favorites like Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime and Gregg Berger as Grimlock (from the animated TV show). Nolan North, who voices Nathan Drake from the "Uncharted" game, also provides some superb dialogue.

Though not a perfect sequel, "Transformers: Fall of Cybertron" is a must for those who loved the original game, as well as folks just looking for a captivating action title. Now transform and roll out!
