Two foreigners, one carrying a Swiss passport, were found dead in the Afghan capital Sunday, city police said, apparently after being bludgeoned to death with rocks.
The men's bodies were found in a residential area of south Kabul on Sunday morning, Deputy Police Chief Gen. Khalil Aminzada told The Associated Press. The motive for the killings wasn't immediately clear.
Aminzada said the two were wearing Afghan dress, but said: "No doubt they were foreigners, from their faces." One was carrying a Swiss passport, he said.
Nick Downie of the Afghan NGO Security Organization, which advises aid groups on safety, said the victims were "white Caucasian males," but had no further details.
Aminzada said the men had entered Afghanistan from Pakistan 11 days ago, but declined to give more details.
Jamil Khan, a senior Afghan detective, said both men appeared to be aged about 30. Investigators were combing the city's guesthouses to try to discover more about them, he said.
"They were hit over the head with bricks or stones," Khan said. "One of them suffered very bad injuries."
The deaths are sure to add to the jitters of foreigners in Afghanistan, coming days after the killing on Wednesday of two British men in the country's east who were working with the United Nations in preparations for September elections. A spokesman for Taliban militants claimed responsibility for those deaths.
