WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate on Thursday cleared the way for a vote to confirm John Brennan to serve as President Barack Obama's director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The Senate voted 81-16 to end debate on the nomination of Brennan and immediately began voting on his confirmation.

Republican Senator Rand Paul spent nearly 13 hours speaking on the Senate floor on Wednesday in an attempt to block Brennan's confirmation.
