A small plane crashed into the roof of a house in southeastern Minnesota, killing all four people aboard, authorities said.

Homeowner Charles DeYoung called 911 Tuesday night, saying that a plane had hit his house, fallen to the ground and then hit a tree, Sheriff Gary Ringhofer said. DeYoung was the only person home at the time; he was not injured.

Ringhofer said all four crash victims were men.

The crash site is in a rural area about a mile east of Owatonna and about 9 miles from the Owatonna’s Degner Regional Airport.

Neighbor Coleen Thompson said that when the plane hit, “It sounded like thunder outside,” said Coleen Thompson.

It was not immediately known where the plane was flying or where it came from. Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration were on the scene.

The National Weather Service said it was raining at the time of the crash.
