We’re looking for rigorous, analytical thinkers and intellectually curious people–producers with journalistic integrity and political smarts who also have other passions that inform their worldview and editorial judgment. We want people–preferably but not necessarily television producers — who have an insatiable thirst for knowledge about how the world works, and about how our politics operate. We’re looking for booking producers who can help us do what makes Up different from every other show on television: Find new and under-represented voices with stories and perspectives that you won’t hear anywhere else. Our brooking producers will have strong rolodexes and extensive knowledge of the organizations and people that represent true expertise in a broad variety of fields. They should have the ability to book a wide range of national and international newsmakers, scholars and guests from various fields including politics, foreign relations, business/economy. We’ll also need booking producers to conduct pre-interviews and work with our technical and support staff to ensure that all the logistical requirements are met to make our interviews possible.
We’re looking for writers/researchers/producers, preferably but by no means necessarily with experience in TV news. If you have no experience in writing/producing TV news you need to have an extremely strong background in another relevant field, such as politics/political science or print/online journalism. We are looking for candidates who already have a strong sense of journalistic ethics and standards but are also capable of both creative thinking and of turning material around quickly under pressure. If you do not have experience in TV news, we’ll need to see strong evidence that you possess the qualities we’re looking for–so please send us links to videos you produced, stories you broke, analyses that made waves or other posts that might demonstrate your suitability for this job. We are looking for candidates who have broken news through their enterprise reporting and/or have moved the needle or changed the discourse in whatever field they were covering.
The digital producer is responsible for every facet of the show’s online presence. You’ll manage and create content for our blog at up.msnbc.com, as well our Tumblr, our Twitter feed and our Facebook page. Interacting with our audience during the broadcast of the show and throughout the week is an essential part of what Up does, and we’re looking for people who can think creatively about how to engage with and cultivate our audience of smart, thoughtful, dedicated viewers. Through our blog, our Tumblr and our social media platforms, Up has carved out a reputation online as a source of content and analysis that can’t be found anywhere else, and we want our digital producer to be thinking about new ways to expand on that, such as original online video and data visualization. Writing experience is necessary, and other production skills–video editing using Final Cut Pro, proficiency with Photoshop–are a big plus as well.
Our video producer helps us shape the segments you see on our show every week by finding and preparing video elements that will provoke thoughtful, compelling conversations about the week’s news. If you’ve ever watched the show and thought to yourself, “I know the perfect piece of sound from 1965 for that Supreme Court case on the Voting Rights Act,” this job is for you. Candidates for the job will be creative and intellectually curious news hounds with a strong interest in current events, politics and history. We’re looking for people who think creatively about how to use video in interesting and unconventional ways — you should have clips you can’t wait to show us! Ideally, candidates will have experience working with Avid and/or Final Cut Pro in a television or online news environment; there will be times the video producer will have to turn tape around under tight deadlines.
