Tumblr Mobile Ads Actually Fun to Watch

You might not notice that Tumblr is adding a few ads to your mobile feeds, but they are there. On Monday, (April 22) Tumblr announced it was bringing over a few "sponsored posts" from its brand blog to the feeds of its mobile users.

About a year ago, Tumblr began allowing a few hand-picked companies, which met its requirements for creativity, to post sponsored ads on its Radar blog, where they were interspersed with Tumblr's own posts. Tumblr users would only see them if they followed Radar. But that's all changed — Tumblr mobile users will begin seeing as many as four ads a day in their mobile feeds.

However, as far as ads go, Tumblr's partner ads are pretty spiffy. At least if today's General Electric post that shows steam rising below a GE  engine during an ice test is representative of those to follow. Already, the ad garnered close to 9,000 likes, comments ("That's pretty dope") and reblogs — very few of which were negative.

Partner ads post in the same square format as all Tumblr mobile posts, and so far, have included an  animated GIF , a favored Tumblr format. Warner Bros., ABC Entertainment, ABC Family and Pepsi are also participating in today's ad launch. An animated ad for "The Great Gatsby," starring Leonardo diCaprio, set to be released May 10, has over 61,000 notes, showing that Warner Bros. has found its audience on Tumblr.

Tumbler  has made it easy to spot the ads with a dollar sign at the top of the post, as well as a note "sponsored ad" under the company's title.

For the first time, social users may actually enjoy seeing ads.
