James Hewitt, the former lover of Princess Diana, has been arrested on suspicion of drugs possession, Britain’s domestic news agency Press Association reported Thursday.

Hewitt’s manager, Aroon Maharajh, told The Associated Press that a client was helping police with inquiries but refused to name the client or give further details.

Citing unidentified police sources, PA said Hewitt, 46, was arrested late Wednesday in London on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs — a category of hard drugs that includes heroin and cocaine. Press Association also reported that a 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of supplying drugs.

Hewitt spent the night at a police station in London and was to be questioned later Thursday, PA reported.

Hewitt, a former cavalry officer, was branded a “love rat” by the British press after publishing a book in which he discussed his relationship with the princess, who died in a car accident in 1997.

In December 2002, Hewitt was again the subject of unfavorable publicity when he said he would sell love letters the princess wrote to him during the 1991 Gulf War.
